Places for Vision Quest
A vision quest, in Native American cultures, may serve as a rite of passage when becoming an adult. It may also be an initiation or a connection with inner guidance and direction. It is actually a reconnection with the Source. The Source is the innate life force and energy that permeates everything and forms the fabric of everything we know and experience. A vision quest or spiritual quest is generally conducted in a wilderness area, but may be done in a variety of environments and situations. It is the substance rather than the decorations that count. A vision quest setting in nature may include mountain tops, rivers, springs, lakes, water falls, large old growth forests, volcanic areas, special geological formations and other places with special energy signatures. A vision quest is a solo experience. In traditional cultures a wise man, shaman, or elder may instruct the quester and provide guidance in understanding any visions or dreams or the lack of them. In contemporary times, many non natives have adopted the term "vision quest" and offer programs where they "facilitate" a "vision quest" for those who pay an admission fee. In Native American cultures, fees were not charged (and still aren't). This was simply an important part of life that was respected, observed and taken seriously. I repeat ... a vision quest is a solo experience. It is more powerful when you walk into the wilderness alone, without a support structure and a bunch of people with belief systems standing behind you. You don't need to be Native American or be connected to Native American culture to have a vision quest. You do need to approach the experience with proper preparation, mentally, physically and logistically. When planning a vision quest in a wilderness area, it is important to hike the area, become fully familiar with the area and select and prepare the location prior to beginning the quest. The most important aspect of mental preparation is attitude and Intent. There are a number of meditation practices and energy disciplines that can be incorporated. Physically, one should be aware of their health and physical limitations and discuss them with their doctor prior to undertaking the quest. Generally, a vision quest includes staying in one place for three or more days. Generally, one fasts during the quest, but you may need to modify this practice if you are diabetic or have other extenuating medical considerations. Fasting does not mean avoiding water. Plenty of water should be taken at all times to avoid dehydration. Everyone is drawn to nature. We seek open spaces, pristene forests, waterfalls, springs, and dazzling sunsets and sunrises. There is a peaceful energy not present in concrete, asphalt and intense human activity. There is a primal energy, an active life force, and an innate respect for life in natural places. We seek this because it communes directly with our soul. This website is about those special places, what they are, where they are, how to get there and to connect with them. The emphasis is on identifying special areas where an individual can conduct a solo vision quest or spiritual retreat. Readers are invited and encouraged to submit articles, descriptions and photos of their own favorite places in nature for inclusion on this site.
