Water Energy in the Vision Quest

      Water is life. Life as we know it exists on this planet because there is an abundance of water and the temperature is in a range that allows that water to exist in a liquid state.

      Springs are places where water comes to the surface from underground sources. In pre white settlement times, pioneer times and in some rural areas, springs are sought out and highly valued both as life giving water and as a source of pure water. The water that emerges from springs has been filtered through layers of porous rock which removes pathogens and other contaminants. In modern times, one must be a bit careful because some ground water tables have become contaminated by agricultural, industrial and municipal toxins.

There are special kinds of springs. Hot springs produce water that has been heated by deep volcanic deposits that have not cooled completely. There are also mineral springs containing a variety of high concentrations of minerals, some attributed with health and healing powers and some toxic.

      At any rate, native people generally respect springs as being a source of life energy, both physically, and metaphysically.

Running water is attributed with special properties. Some shamanic healing traditions construct their structures on stilts in the middle of a flowing river. Islands and sand bars in a running river or stream is a powerful location for healing retreats and vision quests.

      The reason is that running water apparently generates an energy that detaches energy parasites and other other uninvited entities that can drain energy and contribute to mental and physical health issues and confusion in general.
